On my last visit home I felt bereft. Of course I know that change is the only reality. But like any returning native, I wanted to be able to point out ... here, here is where I ate street food. This is the bookstore where I discovered Steinbeck. This is where I kissed a boy and he did not kiss me back. This is the bench you would find my father seated with his cronies, every evening for thirty years.
There are no benches on said street. The street corners have morphed into buildings, the stores have been mowed over to accommodate malls. the familiars are gone. I am a stranger with mothballs on my skin.
So. Nostalgia is what made me write my most recent book.
