Writing fiction is a retirement hobby, so I don't sweat it. I've been writing short pieces recently. I ask "what if?" If no idea comes today, I go back and tweak a draft of earlier work. Or stare at the screen with something I started weeks ago and gave up on. Usually I give up again when I do that. Some fits and starts should never see the light of day.

My first novel had several minor characters who seemed to have a story of their own. One especially intrigued me, so I started writing what about her with what I knew and she told a bigger story that became the second novel.
