Marsh Myers I hate to never say never on this because I have really loved creating and exploring Quinton Wyatt's world. And I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying it as well. However, after I complete My Summer (and the Song of Cicadas) I do have other writing projects I want to address, including my first foray into writing for middle school audiences. Still, one never knows what the future will bring 😉
Marsh Myers I don't have a formal summer reading list since I tend to choose books rather spontaneously. However, after seeing the film, one I really want to read this summer is The Lost City of Z by David Grann.
Marsh Myers Interesting question, because I think there are probably lots of strange incidents that happen to us all that could be the nucleus for a book or a short story or a novella. Honestly, I've always been interested in chance encounters. In other words, having a brief but meaningful experience with a total stranger that was very impactful on your life but was otherwise inexplicable. These are the kind of incidents which have you wondering if it was a question of fate or coincidence. I always thought that might be a good plot point for a book, because I think we all experience things like that.
Marsh Myers The novel I'm currently working on is called My Summer with Robots and is heavily distilled from experiences in my youth growing up in Tucson, Arizona. I think like most authors, I was constantly making up stories in my head and often these spilled over into my waking life. Robot's protagonist, a fourteen-year-old named Quinton Wyatt, has a similar issue as he prepares for his first year in high school.
Marsh Myers Write as much as you can, but on different topics and in different ways. Modern authors tend to be very pigeonholed when it comes to what they write, but I think a good writer will try to expand their repertoire as much as possible. This means trying new genres, switching up your character types, trying your hand at some short stories or even poetry. If you write fiction, have you tried writing a non-fiction piece? Push yourself.
Marsh Myers For me, it's the process of creating new worlds, new characters, new adventures — and then sharing those with others.
Marsh Myers Hey, Trey! So glad you like His Life Abiding and are looking forward to The Men in the Trees. Yes, it will be on Amazon and all the usual online book sellers. I always have discussion pages for my novels on my website too, which will provide lots more information (including buying options) as soon as it's available. You can find the TMITT discussion page here: http://www.marshmyers.com/TMITT-discu...
Marsh Myers Would you believe I go for a walk? There's been some really interesting studies on how specifically walking helps stimulate all kinds of creativity. I actually wrote a blog on this, which you can find here: http://www.marshmyers.com/20140502-Wa...
Marsh Myers Aside from getting through the final preparations for the launch of The Men in the Trees, I'm working diligently on my third novel, My Summer with Robots. This is intended to be the first is a comedic three-part series, following a rather unusual young man through his high school career... and all the trial and tribulations that come along with that. I hope to have it out by late 2015.
Marsh Myers Actually, getting inspired to write has never been an issue for me – but finding time to actually do it has been. Like many aspiring writers, I don't make my living just working on novels. I'm lucky that my "day job" is very creative and requires a monumental amount of creative writing around topics such as nature, animals and environmental conservation. Having different writing projects to bounce back and forth between keeps my inspiration high!
