Creating an alternate reality where you can play out various scenarios and see what happens. I love putting my characters in moral dilemmas to find out if they will (or can) rise to the occasion.

If I am having an issue with writer's block sometimes I switch genres and work on poetry or reviews instead of fiction. Sometimes writer's block is just the long period of time my mind requires to figure out a plot point or character issue, so I try not to beat myself up.
