Maria Hammarström That a story written quietly in one place can find someone you may never meet. A reader can recognize a feeling, a relationship, or a part of themselves in something you imagined. There is something extraordinary about that connection.
Maria Hammarström I don't go looking for inspiration. I listen for it.

It rarely arrives in big moments. It hides in small ones: a conversation overheard on a train, a woman sitting alone in a café a little too long, a couple who stop talking the moment the waiter arrives. The pause before someone answers a simple question. The sentence they begin, and then decide not to finish.

I am fascinated by what people carry without saying. The love that has gone quiet. The choice postponed for years. The story we keep telling ourselves because the truth would ask too much of us.

That is where my writing begins: in the space between what people say and what they mean.

I write about ordinary lives at the exact moment they stop being ordinary. When something small, a word, a look, a realisation, quietly changes everything.

Most of the time, that moment is already happening around us.

We just aren't paying attention.
Maria Hammarström It started with a moment I couldn't let go of.

Nothing dramatic. Something small, almost invisible: a look, a silence, a few words said in passing by someone who had no idea how much they revealed. I remember thinking, there is a whole story hiding in this.

I carried it with me for a long time. I didn't know yet who it belonged to or where it would lead. I only knew it wouldn't leave me alone.

The story grew from there. Not from a plot or even a character, but from a feeling I couldn't explain yet. A question that kept asking to be answered.

Writing the book was how I found the answer.

I won't tell you what that moment was.

But I think, by the last page, you'll know.
