Peter Warner What was the genesis of Lifestyle? Here, in a brief scene from the book, George Werble is walking back from lunch with Gloria, an attractive business acquaintance. They are arguing, in a flirtatious way, about whether it is possible, in New York, to carry off an affair in secret. Gloria declares that sooner or later one is always caught. George disagrees….

“I’ll bet that even here in midtown the odds are remote that either of us would run into an acquaintance.”
She grinned. “You mean you would have no fear at all if I were to affectionately take your arm and gaze foolishly into your eyes?”
She took my arm.
“No fear at all,” I said.
We strolled in our fond manner for a block or two.
“George!” a woman said loudly. I can’t believe it’s you.”
“Gloria,” I said. “I’d like you to meet my sister-in-law Irene Miller, who has come all the way from Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to greet me on Park Avenue. Irene, this is Gloria Pastore and she is smirking because she has won a bet.”

In real life, all this pretty much happened as described except it was my then sister-in-law from Cincinnati, whom I bumped into as I was having a similar conversation. In Lifestyle, George goes back to the office and creates a new editorial feature, the Fashionable Affair. In real life, I went back to my office and started making notes to write Lifestyle.
