I've always written, but when I was young, I never finished anything. When I was 40, we moved to Japan and started traveling around, and the more I traveled, the more I felt inspired to write. Most of my ideas come from places I've visited: some indelible in my memory, like the stormwater culvert in Hong Kong that inspired FOUR FIENDS; others are more subtle--places I work into a story because they inspired me when I visited.

THE TROUBLE WITH DEAD PEOPLE, which will be published this fall, came from a dream I had. I remember that, but I don't remember what the dream was. But a good portion of the book revolves around caving, which I enjoy (in fact, caves managed to sneak into most of my books), also ghosts and a curse, Oak Island, and the end of the world.
