Rick Polito When I was a newspaper reporter, a photographer and I followed a group of "at-risk" high school students through a semester of "experiential education." One of the things they did was backpack in Death Valley. I saw that dynamic and thought it was a good backdrop to a book. I just couldn't figure what the rest of the book was about. Eventually I decided to just start writing and see what happened.
Rick Polito There used to be a bike race called the Race Across America and the racers would ride pretty-much nonstop across the country. Somebody asked one of the winners, "what do you do when you get to Kansas." He said, "you just put your head down and make it go away," meaning you pedal through it. I was a reporter for 21 years. I came of age on deadline. When you have to do it, you do it. I know how to put my head down and make it go away.
