Kim Lehman There are so many great things about being a writer:

Being able to make up stories; Hearing from someone who was emotionally touched by a character or scene in the book; Never knowing what direction your characters will go in next, but letting them lead the way; Having an excuse to buy more pens and notebooks; Getting the chance to escape into a world that is all your own.

Writing the first sentence. Writing the last sentence. Just writing.
Kim Lehman I am not a fan of the term "aspiring" when it comes to writing. You either write or you don't. Everyone has a story inside of them. Anyone can be a writer. If you love to write, write as much as you can.
Kim Lehman Inspiration happens when I least expect it and usually when I don't have anything to write with or on.

I find that most of the time I'll get my ideas while I'm driving in the car. Sometimes ideas pop into my head when I talk to other people about their lives. There are so many real life heroes and love stories out there. I love listening to other people's stories. For me, that is the best kind of inspiration.
Kim Lehman I like writing about characters that face a variety of social challenges in their life. I think those are the types of characters that are the most interesting. The idea for In my latest book, FIRST, LAST, AND ALWAYS, started with the simple image in my head of a girl who was just starting high school, nervous, insecure, and desperate to experience love.

Initially, I pictured a story about a young, first love, but as I wrote the book it evolved into so much more. It's also a story about friendship and family (two themes that I try to weave into all my books), and it's a story about unexpected surprises--good and bad--and how the unexpected shapes us in ways we never imagined.
