Shanil Samarakoon I'm a very visual person. I tend to picture a scene or a metaphor that triggers an avalanche of words. I also need peace and quiet. I am very sensitive to sound and I write best when I am on my own with a cup of coffee and free of distractions. When I write poetry I try to meditate on what is most alive within me during the day. Whether it is a feeling, an image or a message I want to put out there.
Shanil Samarakoon The book I am currently writing is based on my personal experiences surrounding my father's passing. It was a turning point in my life and as the years rolled on , I've got to thinking about the impact of family legacies and the struggle to break out of moulds built over generations. Particularly around notions of masculinity.

It is a coming of age novel about a young Sri Lankan man who sets forth to bury his father's ashes in Malawi, Africa. This is my first fiction novel and it felt right for me to draw upon core personal experiences to share a story that I have been yearning to release from my mind for years...
