Graham Balch Do a lot of research on your subject matter, your scenes, your characters, everything. Readers notice. The more research an author does, the less it is a fanciful creation of their mind. Now, don't get me wrong, every fiction book needs the author's creation of an engaging fictional story - this is what separates us from AI as writers and readers. But research and researched details are the foundation of that fictional story. Beyond that, research can help authors discover plot ideas they would have never thought of.
Graham Balch I'm working on finishing book three, Unchartered Waters.
Graham Balch I started out writing what I thought was a book. But, when I turned it into publishers, they said this isn't one book, this is three. I separated the three parts into three books and had to increase part one by 35% to make it a stand-alone book. So, the idea for the whole series came from a graduate course in education at the University of Pennsylvania. The idea of book one, What Must Be Stopped, came from figuring out plot mechanics that could effectuate an answer to the professor's question and engage readers in the plot with a fast-paced, twisty opening book in the series.
