Bleary-eyed and stumbling, I wrench the fridge door open. It’s empty...

(Minor spoilers for The Long Earth)
That’s really difficult as most are quite dangerous in some way, and while I have a romantic urge towards adventure, getting eaten by a dragon or blown up isn't necessarily tempting! Maybe the science fiction realm of the Long Earth (Baxter, Pratchett) as the idea of sliding in between parallel and mostly unspoilt versions of Earth is beautiful.

The Shape of Water which I’ve borrowed from a friend; a Minoan fiction which I’m beta-reading for a fellow author; the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as I promised to read it to my husband; Good Omens, again.

Inspiration flows from many things. A blackbird calling at dusk; a silhouette of a tree against a pale dawn; an argument with a loved one; a desire to suddenly know more about a particular aspect of my own heritage. I have no control over it, and when true 'awen' hits, I have to respond to its call!

Immersing yourself in a world you created yourself. It's also the worst thing though, as you become so attached to this world that it can be hard to leave it and return to reality!
With regards to my Celtic inspired works, I actually really enjoy looking through the historical sources and cross referencing bibliographies to find more and more obscure references to the particular aspect I'm researching. It's exhausting, but ultimately very satisfying.

Good question. The dreaded 'block' can come upon me at the most inopportune times, like when a publisher is chasing for a first draft, or when three deadlines are approaching at once. I tend to just accept that what I'm writing during the 'block' is just utter rubbish, and take a break. I might play some Skyrim if the wee one is in bed, or make some wine, or play some music. I find once my mind has been completely focused on another task for a while, the creative juices start to flow a bit more. Of course, this doesn't always work, and sometimes I end up a gibbering wreck wondering if I'll ever write again...

I originally wrote an article for Essays in Contemporary Paganism (Moon Books, 2013, Trevor Greenfield) and realised I wanted to expand my essay on Celtic influence into something more. And so A Modern Celt was conceived. I wanted it to be very much about people's feeling and experiences rather than a dense, academic book, so with this feeling in mind did a series of interviews with people from different spiritual paths, and incorporated their stories with my own experience.

Write, write and write some more. Don't ever become disheartened. Sometimes it feels like hard work- so does any job, even the one you really love. Take regular breaks, travel to places that inspire you and just keep writing!

A new volume for the Pagan Portals series by Moon Books. My contribution to this fantastic series is about Celtic Witchcraft. The first chapter is available to read on the Moon Books Blog: http://moon-books.net/blogs/moonbooks...
