Hmmm, that's a tricky one. I don't think I'd be able to relax and write freely if I felt dependent on something or someone else to motivate me. I love to write so it never feels like work.

I've finished writing the sequel to 'Distance' and am now in the final stages of editing the manuscript. This story is called 'Further.'

My books are about families, relationships and small dramas at home that mean the world. The ideas come from personal experiences and observations over time, chatting with other people and generally being immersed in living.

Write something every day. Every single day. Even a shopping list will do at a stretch! Flexing that writing muscle is so important and it's much easier to get into the writing zone (and prevent writer's block!) if it's something that you're doing all the time. Also - don't fall in love with your first draft. Be ruthless in your editing. Oh - and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Just go for it!

Being a writer is what I've wanted to do for a long long time, so even just being able to say 'I'm a writer,' just blows me away. I love the freedom it brings - not being tied down to specific working hours - and the sheer indulgence of writing without feeling like I 'should' be doing something else. Writing is my passion so I'd have to say there's not one best thing about it. It's the way of life, the flexibility and joy of doing what you love.

Sounds corny I know, but I find that by closing my eyes and attempting to block off everything else, I can sometimes hook into the feeling or atmosphere that I'm looking for - and then off I go. Other times however, the only solution is cake. And plenty of it.

I don't get it much, but if I write myself into a ditch, I go back tot he beginning, edit and expand. That normally brings me right back.
