Shannon Bradley-Colleary I stop evaluating the quality of my work. I allow myself to write just plain shitty drafts that no one will ever see and trust each draft will get better in rewrite.
Shannon Bradley-Colleary Making yourself laugh or cry unexpectedly. Being surprised at the words coming out of one of your character's mouths. Making meaning out of brutal, painful situations that seem to have no meaning.
Shannon Bradley-Colleary Don't think too much about writing. Just do it.
Shannon Bradley-Colleary My first novel. It's an adaptation of a screenplay that was never made called "Loving Iris." I made a very decent leaving off of the script by using it as a writing sample for screenwriting jobs, but was frustrated that the only people reading it were directors, producers and studio execs. I hope to have it published in the YA genre.
Shannon Bradley-Colleary I am almost never inspired. I thank (or curse) Steven Pressfield's book, "The War of Art," for forcing me to relinquish being an amateur and stepping up to the plate to go pro. That means punching the clock every day and writing from the beginning of the work day, until the finish. I try not to care about whether the work is good or bad, or to over-identify with being "a writer." I just try to do the work and leave it alone until I punch in the next day.
Shannon Bradley-Colleary I think the title of my latest book, "Married Sex: Fact and Fiction" might be all the answer you need.
