Ask the Author: Fran Macilvey

“Lots of library books! I'm really enjoying skimming the shelves and discovering new authors. I can borrow a dozen books, so if I don't like one, I just add it to the pile for the next return visit. :)” Fran Macilvey

Fran Macilvey "I could try to creep down the stairs as I know I should, would if I wasn't such a coward, and get out of here. But they've disappeared, I've no idea where."

"Fish for tea, she said, and slapped it on the plate like a piece of flabby meat. I couldn't say a word because for his dinner the cat got my tongue."
Fran Macilvey Narnia, definitely, to talk to the trees and dance with them.
Fran Macilvey Hmmmm.... I am revisiting some of my favourite authors: Marian Keyes, Georgette Heyer, Ellis Peters, Mary Wesley, Neale Donald Walsch and A Course in Miracles. I find these reads very comforting, which during the lock-down, is what I gravitate towards.
Fran Macilvey Hmmmm - I love mystery stories, and always feel awed by someone who could write them. Is there a mystery in my life? Perhaps ;) How I got here...Like a lot of authors, I watch and listen and learn a lot about other people's lives, and I love to collect ideas from what I read about other people. But I'm not sure I could call my life in any way mysterious. Open to ideas, though.
Fran Macilvey Oh, I guess that is quite an easy question to answer - thanks for asking!

I am totally enamoured with Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy - so fiery and glamorous! More recently, I am rather fond of...Hmmmm.... Does this count.... Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy? :D :D

I love to get swept up in historical dramas, so I'm also quite fond of Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester, though I find their Victorian sensibilities a bit OTT at times.
Fran Macilvey From the situations I have found myself in in life. Most of my writing is based around real life situations, or could be about what I have seen or thought about. I find that my best writing comes from situations that are true to life.
Fran Macilvey Most importantly, by being happy. Appreciation of life and its gifts is a great way to find material for your next piece. Reading a good book that fires up the imagination is also good, as is the urge to help others.
Fran Macilvey I'm working on my fourth book, the start of a series of books about women and the law. Much of the material for these books comes from my experiences working as a solicitor in Scotland.
Fran Macilvey Have fun doing research, and enjoy your life as much as you can while writing. Having a good life whatever else you may be doing - while writing - is a great way to refresh your determination and get ideas. Don't pin everything on chasing that big break.
Fran Macilvey Having the chance to express myself :)
Fran Macilvey I pretend it doesn't exist and get on with something else, such as editing or networking. Or else I take the day off and refresh the writing genie with a bit of reading or time outdoors.
