Mary Marcus I have almost no memory before the age of six. I have a good idea why, but would like to discover what happened to me in those very formative years I have almost completely blocked out.
Mary Marcus I fall asleep sitting straight up on my stool (it's called ergo ergo and it's a version of sitting on a stability ball). When I wake up, usually I'm not blocked anymore and oddly enough haven't fallen off the stool either.
Mary Marcus Creating a world where you would rather be.
Mary Marcus Don't quit your day job. Write every day. Expect a million rejections and multiply that by ten. Write because you have to, not to entertain anyone or to be cool.
Mary Marcus I'm working on Part III of a short story that spans 25 years. Part I (published in Fiction), was about a night in the 1990's. Part II written by the wife in the narrator in Part I is her version of what happened that night. Part III 25 years later is back with the male narrator from Part I. This sounds very complicated but isn't. Short stories even more than novels let you get to know a character really well. I've always been interested in this family, what happens to them, so I want to complete their circle.
Mary Marcus I don't know what inspiration is. I've been writing my whole life and once in a while I get an idea. The New Me is about as inspired as I get because I actually thought of the idea and starting writing it down right away. Usually a story or a book starts with an image or just from some scrap of conversation when I'm least thinking about working.
Mary Marcus After my son left for college, I was contemplating "starting over." How would I accomplish this? Being fond of my husband, and obliging by nature, I thought the only way I could accomplish this was by "replacing" myself with someone younger, juicer and more appealing. Being a writer, I thought, what a great idea for a little book. Thus, my novel, The New Me was born.
