Elizabeth W. Garber When an idea comes to me, and often a very particular line, I have a commitment to myself to stop and write it down, even if I'm on a hike, in a kayak or driving (I pull over and write it down.) I have scrap paper and a pen in all my jackets and in the car. If I catch that line, often ideas start pouring. Years ago that's how my poems came, all in a rush, line after line. For a year I composed haiku on my morning, and I could repeat the 5/7/5 syllables over and over so I wouldn't forget until i got home.

With my memoir over the ten years of writing and editing, I scribbled down ideas to research, people to call, and questions. One line kept repeating, "What if the one you loved most, disappeared, wouldn't you keep trying to do everything you could, to get them back?"
