At the top of my list is Hillary Manetl's The Mirror and the Light. I have both Wolf Hall and Bring out the Bodies on my writer shelf: books I refer to all the time and especially when I'm in a rut (and need to know it is, in fact, possible to write in the same universe as Mantel).

Why, thank you for asking! Yes, there is a sequel, The Hive Queen. The Hive Queen follow Fir and his brothers as they escape their Captain-mothers and head east hoping for freedom. What they find is a mysterious Hive Queen who presents new challenges not only to the brothers, but also to how Fir thinks of himself and his relationship to Dinitra, the young Captain who helped him escape.

Was that the Haiti book, "Hold Tight, Don't let go"? It would be wonderful for advanced 5 graders and above. An added bonus is that the author lives in Durham and could come talk to a class... Laura is very funny and engaging and the kids would adore her. Let me know if that's the one...
