I'm one of the rare writers who doesn't believe in writer's block (don't break out the pitch forks, haha! See Elizabeth Gilbert's book, BIG MAGIC). I think it's a message from your subconscious that something is amiss with the story. So when the ideas stop flowing and I hit that proverbial wall, I go back and reexamine my story and the direction my characters are going. It never fails to get things moving again.

The flow of ideas, without a doubt. I start giggling like a teenager in love when the right idea hits and starts to unfold in my imagination. As a matter of fact, it feels a lot like the early days of falling in love, too.

I'm currently working on two stories. The first is a rewrite of my the first story I ever finished, A GIRL CALLED GRAYE, featuring some of my favorite vampires ever. The second is a southern witchy story titled, DAUGHTER OF WANDS. I can't wait for the world to meet both of them!

The idea for Cardboard Castles came in two parts. The first was a momentary encounter with a homeless man on my way to work. His eyes were so intense, and the intelligence in his face was unmistakable. If you've read the book, I bet you guess the character he inspired.
The second part wouldn't come for several weeks. I was driving to work again, along the same route, and "Royals" by Lorde came on the radio. Several of the lyrics stood out to me, but "no post code envy" and "let me live that fantasy" set the wheels in motion.
I never encountered that homeless man again, but I look for him every time I'm in that part of town. It's part of the reason a portion of all sales from Cardboard Castles are donated to my local Community Kitchen, which serves our city's homeless population.
