I would definitely go through the wardrobe to Narnia. I'd like to have tea with Mr. Tumnus (after the White Witch is dead) and supper with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver.

Hi Donna,
A group meets in Quincy, I believe. They are on Goodreads as Midwest/Tristate Books. I lead a group here in our area which is about 45 miles east of Hannibal. We meet the first Monday of each month at 6:30 at the Solid Rock Cafe in the Heartland Community. We are sponsored by Heartland Christian College. You would be welcome to visit us, and you can find directions at http://heartlandcollege.org/.

The same way a sculptor deals with a chunk of marble. I chip away at it one bit at a time. If I can't write the major scene that comes next in my novel, I'll do a newspaper column or a blog. I might even write an email to my family or compose a tweet. Eventually, the block gives way and reveals the art.

Connecting with people. Nothing beats having a neighbor stop you at the store and say, "I hadn't planned to put up any Christmas lights this year. Then I read your newspaper column and felt ashamed of myself for being such a Scrooge. I put up my lights." As authors, we have a real chance to impact people, for better or worse. I don't take that lightly.

Don't feel like you have to start with a book. I wrote freelance magazine articles for years, and I still enjoy doing those. I also write short newspaper columns and even the weekly column for our church bulletin. Take advantage of every opportunity to write for publication as you learn the craft. And, learn the craft. Take classes. Find mentors. Join a critique group. Go to conferences.

I'm in the final stages of editing my next novel. I'll be talking about in on my website soon.

Going for a short drive through the country often stirs new thoughts for me. But, I've learned I can't wait for inspiration before I write. The thing that most inspires me is opening my computer and putting my fingers on the keys. At least, that eventually inspires me.

Our church actually cut up a phone book and prayed for people anonymously several years ago. One evening, I prayed for a man named Elmer and suddenly saw Elmer Grigsby in my imagination. He never left me.
