I had, as I said, put the screenplay in a drawer for ten years but it kept gnawing away at my brain like an annoying fly. Since I had been writing my blog and felt like I was beginning to get a handle on writing more than just story songs, I figured why not adapt the screenplay into a novel. Then the breakthrough came when I gave the narrator's voice to the deceased father of the protagonist. "They" told him that he had to "stick around to help his son." Johnny Mulligan, is loosely based on my father, Johnny Haymer. a well known character actor in his own write who sadly passed away in 1989. As a result, this book book became a tribute to him and helped me deal with his loss. Writing is the best therapy I know!
