Jeff Russell Inspiration for me comes in the form of 'what if' questions, which seem to always pop into my head. What if a lantern continued to glow deep underwater? (Cab's Lantern). What if there were another story behind the Manhattan Project? (The Dream Shelf). What if we could live our lives through our dreams? (The Girl Who Watched Over Dreams). What if I should run out of 'what if' questions? (Heaven forbid!)
Jeff Russell My current work - The Girl Who Watched Over Dreams - deals with the way in which the mind interprets our surroundings and makes us aware. It's a fascinating topic, and much like the science behind Cab's Lantern - it's all very real. I'm certain that anyone who enjoys Cab's Lantern will enjoy this story also.
Jeff Russell Don't get bogged down by details. Focus first on 'what' you want to say, then go back and tackle 'how' you want to say it.
Jeff Russell The opportunity to be creative at relatively low cost. There are many ways to exercise the creative spirit but few are as convenient as writing.
Jeff Russell I'm fortunate in that I usually have more to write about on my mind than time to write. If I'm trying to think of how best to word something then I take a short walk and talk it over with myself. The answer usually pops into my head and if I'm lucky it will still be there when I get home :-)
Jeff Russell My latest book - The Dream Shelf - grew out of the question "What if there was another story behind the Manhattan Project - something that was still hidden from the public?" Developing that 'hidden story' was fun but the real reward was discovering how it influenced the lives of the main characters a generation later.
