Chiara Kelly My first novel, The Lady Leathernecks, is based in part on my own personal experiences serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Since my teen years, I had always wanted to write novels. I scribbled some ideas, but never really got around to completing a work. Life always seemed to get in the way. While in the Corps, however, I experienced various cultural dynamics that often go unnoticed by the mainstream, such as hostile workplace bullying, treatment of unwed soldier mothers, mistreatment of introverts, complicated relationships between female Marines and civilian Marine wives and non-combat-related suicides, as well as positive elements of Marine Corps life like sisterhood, camaraderie and patriotism, that implored me to write this piece. I wanted to present it as a contemporary fiction novel, as opposed to a memoir, to allow for more creative latitude and embellishment. In other words, this genre allowed me to convey what I wished I had known before joining up in an entertaining, secure and non-threatening manner.
Chiara Kelly I am currently working on my second novel to be titled, "Six Carats from Tiffany's." It begins basically by signifying a mother's hopes for her children, symbolized by diamond rings she cuts herself. Then the story progresses with the relationship dynamics her sons choose, which may or may not align with their mother's "diamond-worthy" hopes. In the end, the story resolves itself centering on unconditional parental love and the eventual acceptance of one another's life choices.
Chiara Kelly I know this sounds cliché, but just keep on writing! But remember to always fine tune and polish your work, especially if you intend to publish. I would also highly recommend joining writer's groups, especially while in the process of a major work. And above all else, value ANY type of feedback you get, whether positive or negative. Either can help you grow as a writer as long as it is given tactfully.
Chiara Kelly When I just cannot get my self to write, or have writer's anxiety, I usually take a walk outside and/or snag an iced latte. It's amazing how many ideas come flowing while you walk. Also, writing down just one sentence can spark new ideas that can keep you going for hours!
