I actually got the idea from watching the news. I noticed the country splitting along ideological lines into red states and blue states, and Ayn Rand's ideology spurring extremist groups into calls for secession. I was also influenced by my military service in Berlin during the 1980's, and the subsequent fall of the Wall and Soviet-style communism. Having visited East Berlin on several occasions, I wondered what it must be like for people who believed in communism as an ideology, who perhaps had known nothing else, when they saw it start to fail and crumble. What did it do to their spirits, their relationships, their hopes and dreams? The result of these experiences was "I and You."
