Claire and Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, without a doubt. I first read Outlander (or Cross Stitch, as it was marketed here in New Zealand) in 1997 and I loved the tit-for-tat that Jamie and Claire went through in that book. Loved that Claire was strong-willed and spoke her mind but could also be very tender. Loved that Jamie's morals were so deep-set and he was equal parts warrior and lover, and how complicated that made things sometimes. Just pure magic on the page, these two were.
