Kim Neville Thank you for this great question (and hi, fellow WFWA member)! For me, the biggest thing was persistence. I see a lot of good writers put their manuscripts away after getting rejections from 5 or 10 agents. With THE MEMORY COLLECTORS, I sent out 67 queries before I landed my agents. It's always disappointing if you don't capture the interest of your dream agent, but you can never really tell who's going to end up being a good fit. As anyone who's on Goodreads knows, the book that one reader thinks is a bore can be a life changer for the next, and it's the same for agents. I got a lot of feedback along the lines of "this is good but not my thing," or "I don't know how to market it", which isn't a surprise for a book that's described as women's fiction, fantasy, fabulism, literary fiction, mystery, and even horror, depending on who you ask. I knew the moment I got on the phone with Melanie and Taylor at Root Literary that they understood exactly the kind of story I'd written and that they were the right agents to sell it. I'd thought about giving up the search many times, and I'm so glad I didn't.
