Winston Smith and Julia from 1984 (George Orwell)....the tragedy of a desperate love affair crushed by a totalitarian regime is a counterpoint to the belief that love wins through every time. As strong as our feelings for each other can be, they are subject to our own human weaknesses, and we must live in the moment.

I've come to the conclusion that it's best to have two or three stories going at the same time. That way you can flit between them when you hit a block. Often, a relatively minor detail in a different story can spark an idea that get's around a block in another.

Write as often as you can, but don't do it in isolation. What I mean is seek out constructive criticism wherever possible. It's a collection of thirteen short stories, so the ideas came from many sources. However, they were developed during long walks in the local countryside, which gave me the space and the right environment to develop them into rough narratives. Most of them have a distinctly bucolic feel for that reason.
