Short answer--everywhere!
Butterball, the loveable cat in my books is based on my work at the Vet School at Virginia Tech, and some of the hilarious chonky cats I met there. The plot of my third book (PUBLIC ANCHOVY #1, which will be out on 12/26/23) is based in part on a story I heard on the radio. The mobster history of Geneva Bay is drawn from the real history of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Criticism is your friend. The more people you can persuade/bribe/cajole into reading and critiquing your work, the stronger the end product will be. But that advice only applies if you are able to truly listen to the feedback and use it to improve your writing.
