Take part in the NanoWrimo event over at www.nanowrimo.org. That's what got me started on my first book. The challenge is to write a 50,000 word 1st draft of a novel during the month of November. It was a really encouraging experience, very enjoyable and challenging. Definitely gets the creative juices flowing and with a massive community following you have a lot of help and support.

Take your pick! Fantasy books, history books, TV series, fan-fiction, news paper stories, films, even just conversations with friends and family. I see or hear something, and make a note on a notepad or on my Blackberry. Later, and by later it could mean hours, days or months, I come back to that note and develop things.
