In my day job, I travel all over our small town and visit both residential and commercial sites to tend their plants. I have heard conversations that could easily be twisted to plot a crime, seen sights that could lead to murder, and have access to places most would never see. With this kind of insider knowledge, it's easy to create. The plot for Murder for Neptune's Trident was created from this kind of knowledge.
