It started with a photograph of a 70's South African jazz player. There was something so exciting and glamorous about the picture, and it was glamorous because it was in the face of danger, in a world where black artists were not recognized for artistry.
And then I thought of a fictional jazz vocalist (she's not a very good one) in high school, just months before one of the largest student protests the world has ever seen...She's a fighter, this one.
