Vishal Bagaria Reading - you get ideas by reading interpretative fiction more than by reading original fiction. Take an epic, for example, say the Mahabharata, and read dozens of interpretations of the story and the characters. That'll broaden your perceptions & judgments.

Sticking totally to fiction, you can experiment with tons of situations and characters and mold them the way you want to, kill them or spare them whenever you feel like.. Write & you'll know for yourself!
Vishal Bagaria Discuss and talk with a confidante when you hit a roadblock (but be careful not to reveal all spoilers - promise them a dedication to keep their mouths shut). It has worked a dozen times for me.
