I get inspired to write by finding an idea that will begin to self generate. There have been many pieces I've started that have gotten to a point where they stalled, and I was stuck with writer's block. When this happens, it's time to move on to something new. You know you have a good story when the characters start dictating the story line, and in turn this is very exciting and inspiring.

The best thing about being a writer is seeing the characters emerge and story unfold inside of your mind. It's very exciting when the characters start to influence the plot and steer you in a direction you hadn't anticipated.

I'm currently working on a sequel to "Dominoes." I attempted to begin a completely new novel, but the characters from "Dominoes" started pulling my hair and telling me that the story wasn't over. The working title of this novel is "Jacks" and is more about picking up the pieces, but there will still be plenty of twists, turns, and surprises.

My advise for aspiring writers is to simply start writing. As writers we tend to worry about too many things that are not part of the creation of a piece of literature, but part of the polishing process. Get your thoughts onto the paper. They can have a makeover later.

I just push through it by establishing a schedule with the intention of completing a given number of pages per day then I stick to it.

My next book is a sequel to Dominoes, so I would have to say that the idea began with a memory of a trip to Grass Valley. I started describing their annual bluegrass festival from the viewpoint of a festival goer, then ideas and characters just started popping up in my head and essentially took over.
