Whilst I'm in-between projects I keep writing bits and pieces, sometimes they turn into articles, blogs or short stories, but at other times they are not so cohesive and don't go anywhere. It's just something I do whilst I'm waiting for the next heart-and-mind novel length story to grab me by the collar and pull me along.

The other day I was in the changing room at the gym and the woman I was chatting to told me that she'd just finished reading Song for Ria and she couldn't stop thinking about it; that made me feel pretty good.

I put it out into the ether that I'd like to write about xyz one day. It might be something I've experienced myself that I'd like to explore from a different point of view, or it might be something I've researched purely out of interest. Then at some point I find a way into a story which works, usually after trying out a few things which don't work.

Alison, the protaganist, arrived one day whilst I was thinking of writing something else entirely. I saw her in her house, and her voice was so compelling I felt lucky she'd chosen me to transcribe her story.
