Kaitlyn Bringhurst I read a pretty good zombie apocalypse novel recently (in fact, really good). I'm usually not into that sort of thing so much, but it gave me some ideas for a parody of zombie literature in general--with all those normally heroic stressed people, who save the day before the zombies eat their brains, behaving in downright silly and ridiculous ways.
Kaitlyn Bringhurst I'm a dedicated observer of the world around me. I'm like an owl in a tree, patiently watching and waiting. But I'm also very much a cynic. When I see something in real life that makes me shake my head, the first place I go is to the keyboard or my pencil. I absolutely LOVE creating profoundly and sometimes fatally flawed characters who behave absurdly. It helps me deal with reality. If my characters are so horribly flawed... well then, some of those annoying characters in real life don't seem so bad after all.
Kaitlyn Bringhurst Ha... a zombie erotic romance comedy. (seriously!)
Kaitlyn Bringhurst Read a lot--the greats of the past along with everything else you like. Learn the mechanics and usage of your language well. Write. Write. Write!

And try not to give too much heed to what you are told you can and cannot do. Believe it or not, an adverb is NOT evil. Make it flow for your reader, adverb or not.
Kaitlyn Bringhurst The ability to create a new world--an alternate reality--in which I am in complete control of every detail of the lens through which my reader gazes into my world.
Kaitlyn Bringhurst It depends on what kind of mood I'm in at the time. If I'm feeling down, I find something else to do: perhaps a long walk in the woods in my favorite dress or something. Writing and depression almost never mixes well for me. Otherwise, I usually do some "scratch writing" for another book or project. That sometimes gets the ideas flowing again. I try not to push myself too hard or stress out when this happens because it almost always passes within a day or two.
