(And thank you for loving Camp So-and-So so much. I hope it's good company in a time of isolation.)
Mary McCoy Thank you for the question! I thought about all the different kinds of summer camp stories I'd heard - everything from Friday the 13th II to Meatballs to Wet Hot American Summer to The Interestings - and I thought, "What if all those stories were together in one book and what if they were connected?" I loved the idea that being involved in a cross-camp rivalry, being chased by a murderer, going on a quest, falling in love, and foraging off the land to survive could all have equally high stakes!
Mary McCoy I love it when the love story in a book is a friendship like Lenu and Lila from Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels or "Queenie" and Maddie from Code Name Verity, but as far as fictional romances go, in my book, it's hard to do better than Oscar and Chloe from The Feast of Love.
Mary McCoy First of all, it means so much to me that you loved the book - thank you! Dead To Me is a book where the villain is revealed pretty quickly, but the big question is, how is a teenage girl going to bring him to justice? While I was writing, I had no idea, so when I figured it out, when I had that ah-ha! moment where I knew exactly how they were going to make the charges stick and make the bad guy pay it was an immensely gratifying, fist-pumping moment in the writing process.
