I'm partial to a couple I created in, 'Magdalene Bellish', one in a series of short stories in 'Love's Shadow: Nine Crooked Paths'.
Magdalene Bellish and Edward Anderson are incredibly complex characters, and I present the highest peaks and deepest, darkest valleys in their relationship.
Music unites them in an ominous manner. Magdalene is a singer, and Edward is a composer. Despite the deep love that forms between them, Edward’s careless act of infidelity destroys it. Magdalene effectively avenges herself through an act of cruelty. Years later, music reunites them once more. Magdalene surrenders to feelings of remorse, and apologizes on stage as she sings an aria compelled by the spirit of Maria Callas. Edward sits captivated in the audience. The moment he sees her, feelings of love start to resurface.
I wanted their relationship to challenge the reader. To raise questions: Will Magdalene and Edward realize they are still in love with one another? Is Edward's intent to shoot and kill Magdalene? Will Magdalene have Edward arrested again? Will the relationship end in loss once more?
But it's this core notion, this one powerful question, that makes Magdalene and Edward one of my favorite fictional couples -- would you choose love even if it ends in loss?
