I do not get writer's block. If I seem to have it, it's because I really don't have a clear image of where my characters are or what they need to do. So I review my plot outline, perhaps reading over the preceding scene, and then use my imagination. There are plenty of other things to do if you have only interrupted pieces of time that day, such as updating your website or answering emails. So, don't take the day off just because writing is not working for you that day.

I have been reading mysteries my entire life. So, I could not pass a summer--any season for that matter--without hunting down my favorite authors for more and trying out new authors. I have read and loved all of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories since childhood, but this summer I plan to read his other novels and short stories. I have also read all of Lawrence Block's novels and short stories, but this summer I plan to concentrate on his handbooks for fiction writers. His prose, whether fiction or nonfiction, is utterly delightful, conversational. If you love to read, there's never a spare moment, is there?

Many years ago, I had a boyfriend whom I was crazy about. Then, after a year of dating, with no hint, he stopped calling. I always wondered why. Was it something I said or did? Was he involved with someone else? or Did something happen to him? Regardless, I think this event could be the basis for a mystery, more surprising and suspenseful than anything that actually happened, of course.
