Interesting! I will definitely have to check out that book as well. Thanks for the tip. I'm always looking for great books to read.

Hey Susan, thanks for the question! Actually I have not, but funny enough, I did just download samples from The Fireman and Heart Shaped Box. Trying to decide between the two which will be my next read. (Currently I am reading Afterlife by Marcus Sakey and loving it.)
So as far as comparisons go, I will have to get back to you on that. I have heard from friends and fellow readers that Joe Hill's work is considerably darker than his father's, but I am looking forward to reading and seeing for myself.

In the most non-traditional sense that would be Tyler Durden and Jack the Narrator from Fight Club.
(Spoiler Alert:) While not a "couple" per se, they are two characters inexplicably intertwined, one body, two minds, two opposing egos, conflicted over their own self interests. It was fascinating reading Fight Club and being utterly mislead by the narrator to believe that his experiences with Tyler - his alter ego - were real. While Jack created Tyler, Tyler ironically ended up making Jack into a better man.
Or rather, helping Jack find his true self.

Either take a break and come back to it. Or, as Nicholas Sparks once said, back up and see where you might have taken the story off track.

The idea for the Deathwish Game has been rolling around in my head for quite some time. I just never knew who or what was hunting the passengers on the bus, but once I figured out that out - the rest of the story unfolded. Truth be told, I meant it to be a short story, but it kept "writing itself."

Sometimes it's dreams. Sometimes it's out of the clear blue.

Read a lot. Both fiction and non-fiction. Read plenty of How-to-write books, only because each of them offers something useful (whether it's good or bad advice.)
Lastly - write. Write often. If you can, write at the same time each day.

Being able to escape to another world. I rarely use outlines, which can be both a challenge and a blessing when it comes to mapping out a story. It's a challenge because I often don't know what's going to happen next or where to take the story. But that in of itself proves to be the blessing as well, because if the story is unfolding for me as I write it, the hope is that it is unfolding the same way for the reader.

I'm currently hard at work on my next novel, The Deathwish Game. It's the story of a group of bus passengers who awaken to find themselves duct-taped to their seats and told by the bus driver that they are part of a game - a hunt, where they are the hunted by a supernatural force.
