Kendall Purser My inspiration usually comes from something I have felt and/or experienced. Some kind of injustice, dream, or event that I have been through that inspires a character, conflict, or location that is the beginning of the story. Once I have enough pieces of the story I go on to write a formal outline where I begin to stitch those pieces together.
Kendall Purser Creating worlds! I love to create a new environment with different rules and laws that wouldn't work in the real world. I love to draw maps as I get started with a new book or world so that I know all the places my characters can go and see, and sometimes the world itself will drive the story.
Kendall Purser I typically write something absolutely ridiculous! The more ridiculous the better, this usually gets the creative juices going so I can work past the block. I don't usually end up using what I wrote, but it does dislodge the writer's block.

I may jump scenes as well, sometimes the scene just needs to simmer a little longer before you write it.
Kendall Purser The idea behind "The Voyages of the MS Rodent," started when I walked to work for a year through wind, rain, and snow. As part of my commute I had to cross the Snake River in Idaho Falls, and out in the river I saw an island with a burned tree stump which got my mind turning. I was also very interested in sailing at the time, so I put the two together and created a world where mice learned to sail and made the island a major part of the story.
