Gay Toltl Kinman i don't think there's any such thing as a writer's block, any more than a brain surgeon's block or any other profession. if i can't think of another thing to write in the story, then i use a few tricks--bring another person into the conversation which changes the dynamics. switch pov. change the setting. set the story aside and work on another story--i usually have about three things going. if i'm still stalled after coming back to it a few times, i'll do some research on the topic of the story. if nothing works then i set it aside. when i'm finished with some projects, i'll come back to the story to see if i can add anything to it. usually i can. sometimes it's going down the wrong path, so those pages go and new pages are written.

Gay Toltl Kinman keep writing. attend classes, workshops. join the chapter of a writers organization and participate. read books about writing. join or start a critique group for the genre you are writing in. learn as much as you can. it's like any other profession where you can keep learning. of course, read books in the genre you like.

Gay Toltl Kinman i have some ten-minutes plays that were produced at our local theater--the mosaic lizard. i plan to publish those on kindle.(ten-minute play is a genre.) i also have some plays that have not been produced and would like to finish them. i have a friend who knows a couple of actresses and they are willing to read the plays that have been produced. listening to other people say the words is so helpful--so i'll see if they need any revision.

Gay Toltl Kinman i love to write stories. don't know if they are inspired. they're just there and i write them down. of course the work is in rewriting, making sure in mysteries there are no coincidences or 'deus ex machinas'. perhaps that's where the inspiration comes in to try to find plausible reasons for things to happen. brainstorming with myself.

Gay Toltl Kinman "death in hamburg 1974" is based on a story a friend told me. the first part of this novella is true. the soldiers were wearing the current german army uniforms, not those of the s.s. but the plane windows were foggy--it was raining and there were some jewish passengers on board who expressed their concerns about the landing--since that wasn't scheduled. and about that time there had been articles in the newspaper about hunting some of the nazi war criminals. so from that a story grew.
