For Resort, I returned from my first-ever beach vacation wondering about the sort of masks people wear while on holiday. Who are these people we meet and spend a few fun days with? I'd been wanting to write about actors, and then got the idea of working a crime angle into the story. I wrote three drafts to get to know Jill and Danny before visiting Acapulco on a research expedition. And then the novel really opened up for me.

Find a way to balance your aspiration with patience. Be kind to yourself, but always be challenging yourself. Try to write something every day even if it's not your present project.

Take off on my bike for a ride and try to write again in an hour. If that doesn't work, give up for the day and start again in the morning. I don't think I've ever had 'writer's block.' I've been in story slumps, but I'm lucky in that they've never lasted for more than a couple of days.
