Sometimes there's a theme I want to explore. Other times, for poetry, I hear a line in my head and I know I must get it down on paper, fast! Then that one line takes me off onto a poem. Eventually, that line may be deleted but it was the impetus and scaffolding of the idea in the first place, so it serves its purpose.
Another thing I love to exploit are my dreams. The unconscious has a way of giving you imagery you could never come up with on your own. Stranger and darker and in no need of explanation.
