Hmmm... I'd have to go with an unlikely "couple" and choose Atticus & Calpurnia in To Kill a Mockingbird. Yes, TOGETHER, they did a pretty decent job raising those kids!

A friend had a son heading off to college. Given my experience teaching both high school seniors and first-year college students, they asked me to visit their home and answer some questions about transitioning into college. We all enjoyed that session, and I learned as much from them as they learned from me. Soon another family heard about it, they asked me to do a similar visit with them, and they invited another family. We all had a great time again, and someone there said, "Hey, you should write a book about this stuff."
As I thought about it, I realized I was drawing most of my insights from my ongoing teaching experiences. I was also passing along my "wisdom" to my students again and again and again in our classroom sessions and in individual one-on-one sessions. I'd cover so much of the same material repeatedly, I was beginning to sound like a broken record (you youngsters know what a record is, right?!) So, it did make sense to put it all in writing as a potential resource for my students. Better yet, I realized I might be able to reach and help even more people if it was in book form.
So, I carpe'd the opportunity, I wrote the book, and there you have it!

In my case, I'm a teacher first, and a writer second. So, as I was writing this book, it was just like having a conversation with my students, and that was a very enjoyable experience. I could use a conversational tone, I could get deep and serious or add a bit of levity, I could serve up questions that require some introspection on the part of the reader... all those wonderful things I like about being with my students manifested themselves in the writing of this book. It's become an extension of my teaching self, and I hope the book is received as such.
