Bonnie Meekums I haven't really faced that one, but then I don't make myself write when I don't want to!
Bonnie Meekums For me, two things: the getting lost in writing; and the satisfaction of completing something. It's a great surprise, to see what the finished thing looks like. I never plan the ending - I allow it to evolve, to sneak up and say boo.
Bonnie Meekums If you write, you are a writer, not an aspiring writer. Inhabit that identity. Join a writing group. Do NaNoWriMo. I also recommend the free FutureLearn course in creative writing. It's excellent. Oh, and read. Lots.
Bonnie Meekums Two things at once! I am writing a collective memoir, which might or might not end up being traditionally published, and my second novel. But I am giving nothing away about that.
Bonnie Meekums It is in part discipline - the more you write, the more you feel inspired to write - and in part, there is an itch that needs scratching. I sometimes use writing prompts, like when I am at one of the two writing groups I belong to, but mostly I just write. I also firmly believe there is a time to leave it alone, let it germinate, and come back to it.
Bonnie Meekums A Kind of Family, which was my debut novel and recently published by Between the Lines Publishing, started as several connected short stories. I didn't start out with a concept - it crept up on me, unawares. Wiuth hindsight, though, I can see I was inspired by several things, not least my connection to New Zealand, my international and far flung family, and my own experience of childhood separation (which in my case was due to illness).
