Josh Vasquez Well, with my first book, it took several years for it to come to life! It started off as a movie script outline when a friend and I wanted to film a low budget zombie movie in high school. We never made the movie and the outline sat dormant for a long time.
Once I decided to make the outline into a novel, it took several months to flesh out the scenes into chapters and then almost a year to finish the first draft! There was a lot of learning for my first book!
But now planning goes much smoother now that I know how I work. For me, it's best to write out almost a summary of every chapter, kinda like Pre-Cliff Notes. From there I write the first draft and then it's all downhill after that!
Josh Vasquez Normally, I'll either take a break or write something else. I find that working on a side project helps keep the creative juices flowing, even though I'm not working on my main work.

Or I force myself to write anyways.

For example, I was working on a chapter on my second book and could not seem to get past one part. I kept thinking, "Man, this is boring." And as a writer, if you think something is boring, your readers will most likely think it's boring too. But I just kept reworking it, until something clicked and I think that chapter turned out really good.
