The idea began first as a film, Gridiron Underground, that I wrote and directed. I always felt that the film in its 70 minute running time - as good as the finished film was - could only scratch the surface on some of the stories behind many Black Americans coming to Canada to play football beginning in 1946. I did not want to write the definitive history so much as focus on certain individuals through the eras of professional football in Canada; where they came from, how they got here, what they did here, and why they remain(ed) in Canada or return(ed) to the United States.
