My answer is two-pronged.
First, I am a great fan of the Classics. The rich vocabulary and poetic turn-of-the-phrase of the old writers is like magic to me. Among my favorites are Mary Shelly, the Bronte sisters, George Orwell, Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Tolstoy, Salinger, Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, and Poe.
Second, there are contemporary authors of non-fiction that shown me what it is to be vulnerable and accessible. Anne Lamott, Barbara Barkley, Elias Chacour, and amazing writers of fantasy and Si-Fi. One of my favorites is Orson Scott Card.

I would love to visit the world of Jane Austin, which I suppose is historical-fiction. I'd like to meet her characters and dine with them, walk around town, with them, and enjoy the gardens.

To deal with writer's block, I take breaks. The phenomena of writer's block, I believe, is caused by stress or tiredness. I pay attention to that. It's time to take a shower, eat some food, play with the cat, or go for a walk. Then I come back to the table, decide to work for a set amount of time and jump back in.

The best thing about being a writer is the creative process itself. It is cathartic to write and exciting when a new idea pops into one's head. When a finished product is concluded there is a sense of satisfaction and the joy of sharing your work with others.

Write every day. Choose a particular time of day to write, and the rest of the time carry a small notepad and pen with you everywhere you go or dictate to your smartphone. Do NOT worry about whether or not you are worthy of your project. Write first, edit, and seek advice later.

I am currently working on a novel with the working title, "Don't Eat the Garnish." While there is a protagonist, it really is an ensemble cast of characters.

I have piles of projects in the pipeline. I can't keep up, so there's always something to work on. Presently I am writing a novel. My daily writing spawns ideas that won't fit in this book, so they become potential material for the next novel or the one after that.

My most recent book was actually a tutorial series on how to write poetry. It began as one book with the intent to introduce children to poetry. It was going to have a children's book format and look. As I wrote, though, the project developed a life of its own and grew into three books for Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced writers.
