Pauline Gruber Two pieces of advice:

1) Keep a journal (digital or handwritten) for writing notes. Keep a separate one for each book you work on. There is so much information that will come to you at various times--about characters, your world, the plot, conflict. Don't let those details slip away. Log them.

2) Give yourself a set period of time to think through the details of your book (outlining, character development, creating your story bible, etc.). Once that period has expired, set a schedule for writing each week and log it on your calendar. Commit to it. No joke here. If you plan to write five days a week for 2 hours or 4 hours, or 8 hours, stick to it. If an emergency comes up and you can't make the time, fine. Pick another time that day or switch it to a day you previously had off. This is a job and you have to show up.
Pauline Gruber Creating characters! It's fascinating to spend so much time creating a character's history, quirks, flaws, likes & dislikes, and triggers.
Pauline Gruber Everything Everything, the Sookie Stackhouse series, Motherless Brooklyn, the Handmaid's Tale.
