Amanda Panitch First: thank you so much! Second: I have an entire folder on my computer full of stories that petered out around the fifty-page mark. I find that a lot of those hit that dead end because I hadn't fully developed my idea - it's easy to start a story with a spark or a concept that you're excited about - like horses - but try throwing in twists or wrenches in the characters' lives. Make it harder for your protagonist to get what she wants. Or introduce a character that wants the opposite of what your protagonist wants, so that they have to butt heads. Maybe your character actually wants something different than they thought they did. That's what helps me!
Amanda Panitch Thank you! DAMAGE DONE went through a number of title changes: I originally wrote it under the title STILL THEY COME TO HAUNT ME, and it sold to Random House under the title THAT MONSTROUS THING. Both came off as sounding too paranormal/horror-ish for a contemporary thriller, so we went on the hunt for something shorter and catchier. My brilliant editor came up with DAMAGE DONE and I immediately loved not only the sound of it but the questions it raises: who did the damage, and why? Or - as you said - who is really the damaged one?
Amanda Panitch Yes! My next book will also be a YA psychological thriller, called NEVER MISSING, NEVER FOUND, due out in 2016.
Amanda Panitch Yay thank you! I hope you like it. I generally don't rate a book on Goodreads unless I've liked it, so my list of ratings is in itself a list of recommendations, but some of my absolute favorite reads recently have been THE WALLS AROUND US by Nova Ren Suma, THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE by Patrick Ness (though that doesn't release until October, sadly), CITY OF SAVAGES by Lee Kelly, BEWARE THE WILD by Natalie Parker, and the Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan, which begins with A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS.
